Default Factory Oil Filter NOT the FL-500-S !?!?

I noticed on my first oil change (2012 5.0 Coyote) that the original/factory filter was just a bit LONGER than the FL-500-S oil filter. Anyone know why that is ? I don't think you can buy that filter either. Interesting...

No problem, just wondering why they do that, where it comes from, who it benefits, etc,...

Default Just thinking

Maybe the longer one has more media to trap bad stuff or maybe has a finer media to trap smaller particles. Who knows but then why make it smaller when the girls always say bigger is better.

Exactly!

BTW: I couldn't stand it, so I changed the oil at 5500 miles, while the computer said I still had 48% oil life left ! Sorry, I just couldn't bring myself do that.

Way back in 2011 when I got my EB ford specked the larger FL2055 filter. The added weight of the larger filter and oil put a strain on the rather weak oil cooler they latter changed to the smaller and lighter FL500s so some times smaller is better.

Actually, the original factory installed filter was the FL500. Most 2011's came with it. Then they filed a TSB changing it to the FL2055.

Then, a few months later, they changed the TSB back to the FL500

More importantly, if you have an eb, is to make sure the right weight oil get installed. It is not what they are used to, and several of us have had dealers screw it up.

I think all this has been ironed out by now though.

and all of this has WHAT to do with the OP's 5.0 issue?

I have run across 4.6's that come with different filters from the factory, usually on crown vics and econolines. but we have never had an issue replacing the factory filter with what's called for. if the 500 fits I say run with it.

Our old 2002 Escape came with a different filter from the factory too.
