Dealer 5.0 tranny fluid change??
42k miles.. When in for a tranny fluid flush etc. cost me 200$ and I find out when it's done they didn't change the filter cause I never told them to.. Said filter is good till 100k miles.. Should I be as pissed as I am or is this true.. And it took them 2 hrs..

Unless you were having a mechanical issue they should have never flushed your transmission. They took your money and performed a service that per the owners manual wasn't even close to being required. Are you towing a lot? Why did you have the service performed?

I know Ford says 100/150k but I think there are many of us that think clean fluid helps the trans last longer. Can't say one way or the other other than my history with Ford autos:
2000 Explorer, 5R55E, no fluid change - trans dead at 59k. Rebuilder said it looked nasty inside.
2003 Escape, CD4E, fluid changes every 30k. At 144k it's still fine.
2010 Taurus SHO - 6F55, fluid every 30k At 77k it's fine.
Can't comment on the F150 as it's at 49k and I plan on doing it at 60k or if we get our camper sooner.

Never touched my 2000 5.4 either and at about 127k she started slipping bad...rebuilt at about 135k. I am at 82k in my truck now not sure what I'll be doing.

Transmissions are funny. I had an old s10 with 240,000 on original fluid with no problems. Some decent Small boat towing too.
Then my old Silverado developed s major rear seal leak by 70,000 and my wife Malibu transmission was rebuilt by 70,000

There is a lot that goes into ATF lifespan, primarily the fluid itself and the operating temp. Traditional ATF would suffer drastically reduced lifespan even at very slightly higher temps, I have be under the impression the newer stuff is more stable. Definitely not an expert but I have done some reading around, particularly at BITOG forums and feel pretty comfortable with the factory intervals if you aren't too hard on it. Of course, if you tow at all or are otherwise putting the truck through more than just commuter duties by all means...
That said, I will be changing my fluid close to but slightly earlier than the 100,000 mark. Hopefully at 90k.
