Heh, ya thats it ... Wait .... No i mean... I know you are messing with me. But what i am saying is that there may be some bad hardware on board our trucks & if thats the case then all the CPU re-flashes in the world isnt going to fix the computer hardware. In some of the cases, i think it could be a bad torque converter, others could be the water build up in the inter-cooler. I just throwing possiblities out there, i have learned a lot since joining the site

So...12' Screw 4x4 XLT 5.0 with the "ticking" at idle, and just recently..a bit of a "sputter" when put into gear and very light throttle..parking lot speed. Tach jumping around so, it was the motor - this happened twice actually, once at about 750mi (I thought it was just a break-in fluke) then today again at 1890mi..
I JUST got it out of the Ford Stealership service dept. for the "ticking". They told me that "it was a common issue" but they did call Ford and they said that this was normal for the 5.0...and NOTHING was done.

NORMAL?? REALLY?? It sounds like a used 84' Caprice Classic with 280K and no oil... C'mon Ford!!! If it was normal, why did they have to call FORD?? I traded my F350 6.0 for this! I'm going to give the dealership a crack at the sputtering issue..ONCE. In the mean time.....has ANYONE ON THIS SITE OR THIS THREAD have any answers? Not speculation, but answers/results from work that was done??

2 issues for me:

1) Engine ticking at idle
2) Engine sputter at parking lot speeds - light to no throttle

I don't even have 2K on this truck. Definatly not the truck that was sold to me. Sad really, I love the truck. I was soooo sad to trade in my 6.0. It ran like a champ and NOTHING was wrong. I took very good care of it but it had 170K on it and I thought that before something goes I'd get something new that...well, runs great!
I like to hear some of the solutions people have for this stuff. Something to tangible to take to the dealership or Ford for that matter.
Something’s just not quite right....

On a side note, my Father-in-Law is a HUGE Chevy guy, and this has made his day...UGGG!!!

EDIT: I'd also like some explanation (rhetorical) - If this is "normal", what is making the noise (referring to the ticking) and what about make this noise acceptable to ford or the customers who bought the truck??

Default 5.0 ticking

I dont have a 5.0 for starters (2011 EcoBoost 4x2 XLT w/3:15 gears), however after saying that, i have already read here on this site that the ticking is the timing chain tensioner & it needs to be replaced, all here that have had it, i believe had the tensioner replaced & that resolved the issue. Hope this helps!

Default 5.0 ticking

I have a 2011 5.0. Bought it new last October. At around 450 miles it started the ticking at idle and developed a knock when you give it a little throttle when in drive or reverse. I took it back to the dealer I bought it from 2 times and they heard it, contacted Ford, and said they had not had any complaints about the 5.0 on record and that the noises were normal for that engine. I have since taken it to 2 other dealerships and got the same BS. They all said the ticking was coming from the fuel injection system.

The dealer admitted that this was something that was very common in the 5.0, specifically, he said the F150. I guess, I have to ask what it is that makes it common? What is making the noise? He said it was in the injectors...but others on this site are stating tensioner.. What I'm after is someone to unequivically state what's causing the ticking/knocking etc, and what the fix/solution is??? I want to be able to hammer on the dealer.

My second issue has yet to have any fixes..at least that I've read..the engine sputter... I just cant imagine that this is "normal" behavior... I've owned many cars/trucks etc, many of them Fords...and this has NEVER been an issue I've delt with.

Should this be acceptable? either ticking or sputtering??

Use a mechanic's stethoscope to listen to the injectors and to the timing case. That will allow you to isolate the source of the 'ticking' noise.

If you live in a state with a lemon law, you might be pretty close at this point to having legal right to return the truck to the dealer. I think this ticking sound would impact the salability of the truck, which is a legitimate reason to return it in my state. Good luck!

Default 5.0 ticking

The only ticking i have heard from these new engines is from the 3.5 EcoBoost, because it is the injectors because of the direct injection. The 5.0 doesnt have this, and again, was already posted here, other have had the problem and it was found that the timing chain tensioner is bad & was replaced.
