Oh, then maybe get someone else to check them for you.

Couple of things for you to check, based on my having a similar experience with my "11 SCREW FX4, 5.0:
1- If you're running a K&N filter, take it out and run a stock or AirRaid SynthAir dry air filter. I had an incident where the dealer cited the oil on the filter as getting on to the MAF sensor, causing erratic running.
2- If you're running any additives (octane booster, etc.), stop! Run a bottle or two of Lucas Injector Cleaner through it (full bottle on a half-tank of gas). Apparently the other additives leave a reddish deposit from their compounds on the spark plugs, causing them to misfire.

It cost me over $200 to learn the solution for these issues. Fortunately, K&N backed up their product and refunded me the cost of the dealer service. Can you beat that?

Hope this helps. I'm tempted to run a set of E3 sparkplugs to try and boost mileage, but I've heard too many bad comments about their reliability.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Just picked up my truck from the dealer. The following is a loose transcript:

Tech called in stating the vehicle has intermittent misfire at idle. The worst cylinder was cylinder 1 with around 25 counts over a 15 minute period. There are no other codes or concerns present. Driving the vehicle there are no misfires that can be felt and no other symptoms present except an intermittent misfire at idle. The misfire can only be felt when really paying attention and looking for it. The misfire profile relearn was performed with no change noted.

From Ford:
Some random misfires at idle are considered normal operation. With a count of 25 on cylinder 1 over 15 minutes would not be considered excessive. If the vehicle does not exhibit any other symptoms or concerns the limited misfire counts at idle is typical for this engine.

They also compared my vehicle to another on their lot and that vehicle had the same misfire problem.

The misfire can be felt without paying attention and looking for it... how else would I have noticed it.

And this is typical of this engine??? Really? A $40,000 vehicle with the vaunted 5.0 engine and its normal?

Wow. Unless I am naive in the ways of engines, and if I am, please enlighten me. But this dog is being traded in.

Let me translate that for you. We've haven't the foggiest idea what the problem is. Keep driving it until something gives (or blows up) and hopefully spits out enough codes that we know where to start.

Normal my rump.

You'd think when doing these tests and learning most of the misfires are coming from one cylinder, that they would have at least swapped coils around to see if the problem followed the coil. But maybe they know if it's cylinder 1 then that's the normal part, due to the OEM tune.

Exactly my thoughts.

My 2012 has never had this issue. I have had people who owned luxury cars, Mercedes, Lexus, etc, who have commented on how quiet the engine is at idle and how smooth it runs. So, that's not normal.

These guys are nowhere near trained and experienced enough to work on these monsters. The level of technology and automation that goes on they need to have in depth experience in electronics and automation similar to that of a PLC technician. I am an electrician that runs an oil rig and I have to diagnosis everything from power gen problems to my scr system then over to my PLCs that work with my scr firing boards. If these guys at the dealerships had that kind of depth they should be making well over 6 figures a year. In reality they are jiffy lube techs that wait for a SOP ( standard operating procedure) to tell them step by step what needs to be done. All in all they have very little troubleshooting skills. But hey for 13$ an hour, would you?

I too have the knocking, but it seems to be getting quieter the more miles I put on her. Yesterday while waiting at the drive-thru I really had to listen hard to hear it even with the window down and the radio and ac fan off and I could barely hear it over the cooling fan. Where as with less miles on it I could hear it with the windows up.

Hey All:

Just wanted to let you all know that I have these same issues with my 2013 5.0.

I have had it at two different dealerships. Ford won't do a damn thing. They refuse to inspect the plug gaps.

I will have to pay somebody to gap my plugs and then test.

But I will have to wait until after Christmas, 3 kids and wifey is a lot of gift buying...
