3.7 behaves like a 7 speed
Anyone with a 3.7 notice that 4th gear has 2 stages? I'm guessing it's the torque converter going from partial to full-lock?

Mine feels that way, too. While the torque converter locking and unlocking may happen in other gears as well, it is more noticeable in 4th when you are hill-climbing.

There was a thread about this a while ago. I believe the converter locks in 3rd in most cases, and then the truck shifts to 4th. More likely it happens at both times.
Same thing happens when you put it in manual, rpm drops as the converter locks up.

It has been done in transmissions in big trucks for a long time. It allows for a bigger difference in ratios. Allison does in in dump trucks starting with thrird gear. It makes them work like a 8 speed. It does require a little higher torque converter stall. The Lincoln LS V6 had it and at full throttle there was only about 400 rpm between shifts.
