Colder temps make the oil not flow as well. It could potentially cause startup rattles.

Did an oil and filter change with a Motorcraft filter and 5W20 and it was a little better.

Default Here’s my story on my Ecoboost

I drive my 2012 very hard and really haven't had major issues until recently with the dreaded tick on start-up; intermittently. It first started a few weeks back with loss of power and it honestly felt sluggish. I knew something was wrong but no check engine light. Finally the check engine light came on and these codes came up (P0365 and P0369). I was thinking about replacing the 2 sensors to rectify the problem and came across the TSB 16-0027 on this site. Coincidentally, got in the truck to get the sensors and the tick happened. Decided I would do some more research on the tick and after reading more info than I would like to read I figured I would do the overhaul. Considering my motor has 143K+ and as much as I don't want to spend $1000 on parts to do it myself it is better than spending over $3k; money I don't have, on having the dealer do it, or even worse destroying the motor completely. Honestly speaking I really haven't had much trouble with the truck up until now. Here is a list of the repairs I have made since I bought it:

Routine maintenance; oil changes, tires, air filter (Replaced with K&N), wipers, etc...
Both front calipers, all rotors, and all pads.
All the coil packs.
Spark plugs (cylinder #3 plug was cracked).

The one repair I haven't done that is covered under a recall is the vacuum pump. Although, I am thinking about getting it done soon.

If anyone has done this timing chain overhaul themselves and has any additional input I would certainly take it. I have done a few timing belts/chains and have never had a problem so I figure as much as it is going to ruin my weekend I am up for the challenge. I am ordering all the parts from the TSB and the additional following:

BL3Z-6L266-A Engine Timing Chain Tensioner
AT4Z-6B274-A TENSIONER ARM
AT4Z-6K255-A TENSIONER ARM
BL3Z-6K297-A Chain Guide
BL3Z-6K297-B Chain Guide
BL3Z-6K297-D Chain Guide
AT4Z-6K254-A TENSIONER

The total part cost is $879.57 from Tasca Parts as they were the cheapest without wasting my whole day trying to save a few bucks.

$40.00 from amazon for the cam tool and roughly $30.00 for oil that I will purchase in store.

So roughly this is going to be a $950.00 just in parts, unless I am missing something. FYI I also have all the pullers I need so I don’t think that will be an issue.

If anyone has any advice or input I am certainly willing to listen. In addition, I will also post my experiences/pictures doing this job when I am done.

Thanks!!!

Local dealer ended up being a joke. Took it to the dealer I purchased from. Was treated like a VIP. Dropped off on Monday, was told Tuesday they would perform both TSB 14-0017 and TSB 16-0027. They gave me a Lincoln MKX to drive also. I am out of original warranty but had purchased the Ford EXtended Plan. Whole thing cost me $106 for the deductible.

Varsity Ford in Ann Arbor Michigan is great! I could not be more relieved.

Default Mine does this as well.

I am so glad to hear that I am not the only one with this cold start rattle/high air pressure leaking noise for the first few seconds. Have been to dealer multiple times and they never can figure it out..!!! They did replace some sort of piston gaskets or something this last time and it helped a little but its still there. So, is TSB 16-0027 the most current fix? Also, am I screwed because I am out of warranty with 105k? I read this and not sure what it means:

“Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage And Emissions Warranty Coverage.
Warranty/ESP coverage limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. Warranty/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool.”

It is covered by the standard 5yr/60K mile Power Train warranty, and/or any purchased ESPs (Extended Service Plans). I'm thinking all you have is the standard warranty which if that is the case is long expired now with you having 105K on the ODO.

Yep. Im screwed. If dealer was a stand up operation, they would have known about this and made the repair back when I was under warranty. Any idea what I should expect this fix to cost? Also, does a dealer have to make the repair? There are a couple of reputable auto repair shops in my area. Thanks for any responses!
