Made no difference for me unfortunately. I bought mine new and it has had Pennzoil Platinum in it since the first oil change was done. Noise didn't start until about 50k miles or so though. Very intermittent. Only got more frequent over the past 4-6 months. I had it all fixed under my ESP a few weeks ago at 80k miles.

Case by case situation I'm sure, but synthetic oil, in my opinion, wouldn't be a huge difference maker for this issue.

Just out of curiosity and to compare with my own vehicle, what was your oil change intervals? Did you go 5k miles or more?

You weren't asking me -- but I do mine at 3k just to be especially proactive in this rattle dilemma

I've always done them at my regular tire rotation, 6k give or take.

I also had a 2011 EB that I bought new and drove it to 50k miles before trading it in and used the same oil. That truck never made a sound. So who knows?

2011 SC 4X4 3.5L EB makes a thumping noise that seems to be coming from under the dash, behind the radio. Only seems to do it when it has been sitting outside in the sun for an hour or two. Sometimes 1 or 2 thumps, sometimes as many as 9 or 10. Doesn't do it on restart or if it has cooled down, like at night or in the shade.
Could that be due to a vacuum pump? I have a recall for a vacuum pump.

Could be vacuum pump...there is a TSB on it. Mine had a high-idle miss (Sounded like a thump) for a long time even with new plugs. Would go away when the idle dropped to 1000. Dealer couldn't figure it out...recommended a $200 cleaning. I decided to try injector cleaner in the gas and...the problem is gone. These 1st gen Eco's run very dirty. No gas through the intake valves (DI) means nothing is washing the valves and a lot of crud is being put back into the intake manifold by the PCV system that is burning onto the hot valves and plugs. Latest generation has some kind of fuel injection washing the intake valves so Ford knows the initial design was faulty. I have a race quality catch can that filters out a lot of the crud...I know the exhaust pipe is much cleaner so not generating so much carbon. Without all that carbon, the plugs will probably last longer too.

Ford added an injector pre cylinder to help wash the valves. Just like the old multiport system. They also kept the direct injector in the cylinder.

Hey guys. I’ve got a 2011 ecoboost screw and I had the timing chain and phasers changed just before my warranty at 100000. It now has 149450 on it and the noise started again. Had codes p0365 and 0369 flashing. I took it to the dealer because it was getting really bad They told me at the dealer that my sensors were bad. They said that that should fix the problem but worse case I jumped the timing. I purchased the two sensors for bank 1 and replaced them yesterday. The truck is acting the same as before. Now I’m worried my timing is off and who knows what else got messed up. The old sensors were caked with filings. Pretty sure that they didn’t change the sensors when they originally did the warranty. It should be something they replaced as part of the warranty. Now I’ve got to come good for whatever else is now wrong with it. Been a frustrating truck

Has anyone noted a difference on the start-up rattles between cold and warm weather? Living in MI, the nights right now are getting as low as 20 and the days are getting as high as mid 40s. I have an appt at the local dealer Monday morning. Thanks.
