Try using your cell phone to capture the noise. Set it on the radiator and then go start the truck. When you get the noise, then go back to the dealer.

Thanks, the noise won't come up in warm temperature, guess will have to wait until next winter.

Its only a common problem in the winter for some reason. The engine has to be fairly cold. but like I told u guys in my previous post, when I had the noise, the dealer pulled the motor apart to find

-Gears and chain worn bad
-Removed mains and rods, mains worn bad
-Cam caps and cam worn

Motor was replaced with a new short block from ford, if your noise is a loud chatter for 3-5 seconds on startup only, this are most likely your issues, not a vacuum pump

My 2012 eb has only 13k km on it. What about yours when you had those issues?

So started the truck with the keyless start this afternoon and heard a noise. It sounded like metal on metal, almost like metal fan blades hitting a metal shroud. Only lasted for like 3 seconds and sped up and got louder as the truck idled up. Sounded like it was coming from the front end of the engine. Never happened before 9k on a 13 Eco. My 11 Eco with 98k on it has never done this. Truck is stock. Visual inspection showed nothing wrong. Anyone figured out what causes this rattle yet?

Well it's started again. I took my 2011 eb in with the help of ford customer service rep and they checked timing chain and found worn teeth on gear and replaced chain and tensioner. I was excited to be done with the problems I have had with my truck but a couple days after I got it back It started making the grinding noise again. It now sounds like it is coming from more the top of motor Really!?!??! I took it back and left for a few days and they couldn't reproduce the noise. So out of frustration I brought it home and haven't been driving it much. I hate in morning when I start to go anywhere and I hear that noise it just ruins my day! So I let it set for 3 days and started it this morning and the noise was worse than ever. I called to take it in today and leave for weekend and let it set til Monday. I was told by service department is all they can do is reproduce noise and call ford. Ugh!!! Any suggestion??? Keep fighting? Any suggestion on other brands of trucks? I a ford man but at what point do you cut your losses?

My 2011 has never made the noise. The 2013 did it again this morning after sitting all night. Sounds like it could be the timing chain having slop.

It could also be the vacuum pump that is right around the drivers side tire I think. That would be much less serious and reputedly sounds awful when it starts going bad, and it has been reported fairly often.

Good luck!

Hey Stang05U. If the sound is coming from the timing chain area then its the timing chain stretching. As I said in my previous posts I had the same problem. If you let the truck sit over night and start it sometimes it will make a metallic grinding sound for about three seconds coming from the top of the motor. This is not the vacuum pump because my vacuum pump is now starting to go and it makes a different sound. The vacuum pump will also make the sound two or three times after start up whereas the cam sound will only do it once, first thing in the morning. My dealer changed the timing chain tensioners and it didn't fix the problem. It created more cam ticking until the engine finally failed and when it did, it sheared the timing chain gear off the crank. Sheared the key way pin right off the crank. (I have pictures) The timing chains on the ecoboost motors are stretching prematurely and if ford doesn't change the chain and tensioners the motor will eventually fail. I have spoken to a guy I know at ford and he told me that they are aware of the problem so don't let them tell you it just the tensioners. I eventually had the motor replaced by ford (short block) and its been running fine so far. I have 35,000 kms on the new motor so time will tell. Good luck.
