2011 5.0L Coolant Leak
#101
Another happy adopter of the amp77 mod here. I ordered the Pegasus parts as listed and used the reducing elbow, hose joiner, one of the larger hose clamps and two of the smaller hose clamps.
Took about an hour and a half, but 30 mins of that was fighting to get the reducing elbow on to the expansion tank. Ultimately I had to remove the tank/air box assembly to get the elbow on and all the way to the top. Everything else was easy-peasy!
Another big thank you to amp77 for the mod!

Deejay,
I did it the same way as you. I removed the entire reservoir assembly. I'm guessing it can be done without it but it's pretty quick to remove and means less crawling into your engine bay!

did you use the 3 ply hose? When I did the repair the 3 ply hose slid VERY easily onto the expansion tank outlet. I also noticed that you used only one clamp at that location. Let us know please. There are apparently many of us that have had to deal with this issue and any more useful info on how to successfully fix it without going to the dealer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Deejay. I'm sure you got the right hose if you ordered from the info I posted. It's strange that your fit was that tight but as long as you got it on there that's all that counts, right? I did have the expansion tank on the ground when I slid the hose over the outlet. Maybe it just seemed way easier because I had plenty of leverage.
Thanks for your input. I'm really happy that people are having good luck with this fix and not having to spend too much at the dealer!

I ordered the exact same part numbers that you listed earlier in the thread, so I assume I was sent the correct 3ply hose. The hard part was getting the hose over the ring towards the top of the the expansion tank inlet. My fit was so tight that I decided the one hose clamp towards the top was enough. I probably could have gotten buy not using one alltogether!

Well, hopefully this is the last update to this thread. I replaced the coolant reservoir and coolant hose over the weekend. I also added a bead of permatex to the mating surface between the reservoir and the teflon reducer in the coolant hose.
After letting the RTV set up over night, I refilled the system and checked for leaks. None to be found.
There were no visible defects in the reservoir that I removed; so, I will still be paranoid about this repair for a few weeks. If anything changes I'll be sure to update again.

Hi. I just have a quick question. My 2011 5.0 is having the same problem so I ordered a new reservoir and hose. My question is how much of a pain was installing the new parts?

It's pretty simple and only requires basic tools. The reservoir is part of the air filter assembly so you'll have to remove the air tube as well. I have pictures early on in the thread showing the location of the lower drain valve for the radiator...the biggest pain is figuring out how to drain the coolant without making a mess; but overall the whole project is fairly easy even if you aren't that mechanically inclined.

Thanks!!!
I really appreciate you posting this! The dealer in Las Vegas "hasn't seen this problem at all." His parts guys has sold 10 tanks so far this year. Hmmm.
