SCT X4 update warning

While loading my latest tune file to my SCT X4 last night, the system told me that an update was available. Since I already had the truck back to stock tune, I clicked Update...

Well, my SCT X4 is now a brick. Spent time with the SCT Support team this morning and even they could not get it to work. It’s only a couple weeks old so they are covering the repair under warranty. I have to pay for the return shipping and wait for the delivery + turn around time.

The very helpful tech said this has been happening lately, so I thought I’d warn those out there with this device. If you try to install the latest device updates, you may make your X4 unusable.

I had this same exact issue. Except mine bricked after the tune install and it didn't tune the truck correctly. It was bad. Then I couldn't return to stock and my stock file became corrupted. Finally got the truck back to stock after multiple calls with SCT and have now sent the x4 back to them to fix. The only thing with mine is that I am out of warranty so it's gonna cost me 100.00

Now that I know others had the same problem, I have some negotiating power. Thanks for the post.

Sorry to hear that you’ve suffered the same fate.

I’m hoping that I don’t set off my CEL by driving my truck on a stock tune with a 170 stat installed.

I’ve read about this happening often with the X4 all the way back to 2016-17. Wish I had read about that prior to buying one. I guess having multiple tunes on hand is pretty silly when you can’t trust your device to install them without crashing or even worse without messing up your vehicle.

I plan to reach out to MPT this morning. My concern is that the device will come back and my tune files won’t recognize the X4 or something like that and I’d be out additional funds to pay for a “tune update”. I’m also very likely to pass my 30 day free datalog review while I wait for SCT to un-break the device their update messed up.

...but I’m not bitter...

i had all sorts of problems with my x4. i tired many, many times to get it to work with my truck and it never did. worst was the time it turned off midway though the tune and rendered my truck a brick on a saturday morning. used their emergency contact info and still did not get it working until monday when someone was actually in their shop.

Now imagine if they had made you send it in with a +/- 17 day wait....I do not know many people that can go without their main mode of transportation for two weeks while they wait for a company to fix their device.

Jeez, that sounds a lot like mine. I glad mine didn't brick like that.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I thought I was saving money by reusing my x4 from my 2016 but now I am uneasy using this thing.

What is a better option? I figured with so many tuners (5 star, MPT, etc.) offering this device as a package that they had confidence in it.
