When I get out of college I just may get the gear change as my education is virtually paid for already, but I can't do it right now.

How many tunes do you run on your Gryphon? Just the 87 and the 91 Octane? If I was to do some racing, just for the heck of it...would it be wise to get the 91 octane tune too? Just curious how much extra performance I would get out of it.

As for the cats, it would be a royal PAIN in my *** to take them off the way they are welded on now (even though I am capable in the shop) so I think I will just go with the flow. Pun intended. Leaving cats on.

Thanks again for your help, it looks like you spent a decent amount of time writing up that reply for me.
The Gryphon can hold 3 different tunes. I use just a 87 and 91 performance tune depending what I have in the tank. I never tow anything heavy enough to have a need for a tow tune. To be honest you might see a slight gain by using the 91 over 87 but don't expect a huge jump like it will be going from stock to a tuner. Of course all racing that you would be doing would be kept on the track and off the streets.

Other modifications you might want to look into that are cheaper than gears are things like electric fans and under drive pulleys. These should be last on list because the gains/price isn't as good as things like the programmer. Also a couple other problems come with these. Electric fans, especially the controllers, are prone to failure. Under drive pulleys are said to be a little harder on things like the water pump and power steering. It just depends how much you're willing to spend to squeeze out a few more hp.

good to hear it. Thanks, enjoy your new truck.

Thanks...I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead. I don't need to have problems while I'm at college, especially just for a couple extra horsepower. I think it's a chick magnet as it is. What do you say?

I also wanted to ask your personal opinion on mufflers since you seem to know a little of everything. I think what I want is the deepest and most powerful sounding rumble that I can get, while still at a decent price. Flowmaster Super 44s? Or can you think of better ones...?

Oh, another dumb question. Do they make custom cruising tunes, such as ones only for MPG gain? I'm guessing that comes built into the performance tunes, but I wasn't sure.

Well I'm not female so I can't say if it's a chick magnet, but I don't think it can hurt your odds.

Personally I like the way straight through mufflers sound on these motors. Magnaflow and Dynomax bullet are my favorites. Listen to clips of them on youtube and find which type sound you like best. EVERYONE has their own opinions on what sounds best. I have a magnaflow for my own truck. I'm a little odd in the fact I got a 22" which isn't that much louder than stock. I like my own rides to be halfway quiet. I would suggest a 14" magnaflow or 12" Dynomax race bullet to keep some sound and have that deep, aggressive tone.

For the tune question, I use a performance tune and I get better mileage than what it was rated at new. Some companies offer econo tunes but here's what the expert Bill Cohron at PHP who has been tuning these trucks for years says about it:

"For maximum fuel economy, you should choose a performance calibration, and most people will use a performance tune as their daily driver. Our performance tunes provide aggressive fuel curve and timing curve changes to help maximize efficiency and performance -- not just at full-throttle, but throughout the entire throttle and RPM range.
Fuel economy gains rely greatly on driving style."

Whether it's wrong or right, I decided to put glass packs on...and I'm getting it done in the morning. If I don't like how it sounds the guy I have doing it said he will take them off. What do you know about glass packs?

I dont know if glass packs will give your truck the "rumble" you are looking for. Glasspacks give your truck a loud crackle when you let off the gas. I myself think they sound pretty good, but they sound more obnoxious than just true duals. I think if you went with flowmasters or magnaflows you would get that deep rumble that you are looking for more so than glass packs.

I got the glasspacks put on. I watched the guy pretty much the whole time. Afterwards, I inspected his welds and made sure all the pipes were straight. He did a pretty good job, maybe a little better than I could have done without a fancy pipe bender. It sounds great! It's about the same good rumble, but it has quieted down. First time I ran it with the new glasspacks vs. straightpipes it cackled loud as HELL. After I ran it though, it quieted down and now it doesn't cackle at all. I am satisfied. I would reccomend the glasspacks because they sound pretty good and they only cost me $17 a piece. I also got some sexy angled pencil tips for $20 a piece. An hour of labor at $45 an hour. Not a bad price overall I thought.

I don't usually but I'll be going to college in northern Colorado, so it will snow occasionally. I'll keep it clean to at least delay the rusting process.

Depends on the type of driving you will be doing..BFG's are better for offroad than the Terra Graplers but the Grapplers ride a lot smoother in my opinion..ive had experiences with both!
