Default Major cilinderhead overhaul

Hi guys
I do read a lot here and very often "engine stutters", shudders and so on..
My engine was running rough when I bought the truck in July, but.... the end is in sight now
when I bought her, the engine was shaking with the TPS sensor connected; smooth disconnected.
The ignition timing was slamming back and forth due to a wrong LPG equipment. Because of the fact that the 5,8EFI isan injectionengine, tje LPG had to be injected as well.... Ignition is superb but after some time some shudder came back

LPG injection Prins/Keihin

In the mean time, I did blocked off the EGR... new sooth/coal could not been made and land on the valves, so they started leaking!!
I went to a USAFORD specialist who told me that with this type of Ford engine the valvesprings become weak after 160000miles. He was right about that!

Here's the homemade tool was made the springchange possible without liftingthe heads.. compressed air thru the sparkieshole helped to keep the valves at bay.

[/IMG]

After changing the springs... My God, the lazy engine became a real racemonster fast and furious, exept for a minor detail....
The sooth had camouflated the leaking valves a bit and due to the weak springs coal was not distroyed longer anymore and when you drive a certain speed, everything is running great, but when you accelerate, the combustion spits back thru the inletvalves of cil No6 and 7 . Because of that, the vacuum will drop for a moment(because MAPsensor measuresthat) and fuel is shut down for tenths of seconds. When I disconnected the TPS, one could lay a dime on the engine, because in "Limping home mode" no sensors are at work.

See some photo's underneath .

I did removed the smogpump...it will not go back... have to send it to Al Gore (ohh Ican't help it, Ido not like that man)

I keep you guys posted.

greetings from amsterdamTon

Nice job with the PICS. Was looking at the dist cap with your cylinder numbering. I remember #1 being positioned one tower position counter clockwise, like where #3 is now. Was wondering why?

Nice job on making the valve spring compressor tool, looks very effective and professionally made, are you a machinist?

Hi Bobkyle Thanks mate!! The truck did came to Holland six years ago; from Nevada I presume (because of some stickers in the trunk) . she's in a pristine condition an no rust at all. when I bought her, she was mintgreen and because we do have also a piantshop , my collegue sprayed the truck in antracite metallic two months ago.
The bike, a Bee em 750/5, I bought her in 1978 and is still my fav. ( I never fancied "noodlebikes" from the land of the rising sun) And because we are also Dealer of Lucas Oil for the northern part of Holland, she is stuffed with Lucas ,and that makes her to a happy running Bike!

Hello Good Old Bill
I'm a fitter turner (english) or machinist (am) and with three other guys we do have a machineshop and paintshop. We also tune HD twincam and Evo.

talk to you both later.

greetings Ton

Unfortunately for ton's sake, they do have aftermarket tools for this job, none look as nice as his does.

Default aftermarket tools

In our workshop we do use a lot of "Jims" they are from the USA and clever and simple made to make the work on Harley's much easier. ( last summer old Jim and his son paid us a visit; we were very proud with that gesture.
I allways fancy toolmaking; okay i'll cost time, but what a pleasure to work with. I've made ,for instance a cantilever table to grab two HD cilinderheads in one time for refurbishing the valveseats.

today I had no time to work on my cilinderheads; I had to work in overtime; I had to machine 4steel tubewith 6inchNPT thread... they do send it on a plane to the Russian oilfields tommorow.. but that's an other story
Time to have a cuppa tea well laced with milk and rum No, I;m NOT British

cheers Ton

Default update

Hi everybody.
I've gave the valveseats a little re-cut with the Serditool. The valve guides were within the tolerances.

regrinding. I felt all my arm muscles next day!

new goodies!

Old soldiers never die; but this ones retire.

The new valves do fit great! I've put some gas in the combustioncambers; nothing leaked thru.

situation of tonight (it's 2200hrs here) The cilinderheads are at the engine block with the right torquesettings. I thinks My muscles are aking tommorow. Lying over the front, legs up and pulling twenty times 115Lb/ft.

Default smogpump scrapped

Hi everybody
Here are som pics of the bracket ,with I've machined which is in place now instead of the smogpump.

The smogpump can disturb a lot.... At first it causes misfires and sometimes exploded mufflers. second fact is, that when the gasses become to cold, the pipes will rott away faster (all the bolts and studs on my engine were fine exept the studs on the heathers... That tells me that my ford has seen a lot of exhausts in 16 year.

My truckie is back on the road now and she has a smooth ride.

an other fact, which I'read somewhere here at this forum, is that I've put an extra ground cable between throttle box and negative ground of the battery; my tranny shifts as smooth as silk

greetzzzz Ton
