Issue with not starting?
Hello,
New here, but here goes. I have a 01 F150, sport 4x4, 5.4L Triton. Love the truck, but recently it blew the #3 plug out and broke the coil over (just where it bolts on). I repaired the spark plug hole, rethreaded, put the new insert over the plug and got it back in, jb welded the plastic piece back on the coil pack so I could bolt it back on. All that went well and then when I started it, it ran fine for about 15 seconds then sputtered and died. Then when i try to start it, it just makes an odd noise. It doesn't exactly 'turn over' but its not the high pitched noise of a bad starter. I'm at a loss on this one, could something as simple as it being out of gas cause this problem/noise? Thanks so much!

Okay Cs, you may know by now what's the problem. If so you should let us know what and when so we don't bother with rendering a response of which takes time; time when we could help others or tend to our own problems. My 1st time efi an 88 is giving me problems, won't start and their is so much to it that it's a pronlem for me.
With that said, I have a 06 5.4 w/120k and like to keep up with others in case something goes awry with mine. Your engine either turns over or cranks, the same thing, or it does not. I've a million miles on Fords and 56 years workin on them and have never heard of a high pitched noise of a bad starter. I have heard a high pitched squeal before from the starting hardware and it's because of a very low battery which is usually caused by corroded terminals. Battery terminals, lugs, are lead and being so should always be almost shiney like chrome. Black on lead is corrosion, light gray is ok, but black can be too thick of corrosion and be a severe insullation and the current, amps, from the altenator are not sufficient to pass through the black, but the amp draw of the lights, starter, horn and etc are high enough to pass through the black and over a few days can drain your battery untill you hear the squeal or just a clicking sound.
From what i've just learned about my 88 efi, injectors need electricity to open, even the type of ignition requires a certain voltage to run. When, on mine and probably yours...a later but similar ignition, I turn the key to start, the system goes into a start mode where all the current goes to the starting needs of several bells and whistles and then when you release the start it goes into run mode which puts all systems loading the battery. Your battery just may have been low enough tht's what happened.
to better help you, we out mhere need to know all you have done and not done to your engine and etc, including the miles, injector cleaning additives, fuel pump (working okay,) and etc, etc.
So, charge your battery and check the voltage and the fuel gauge, if empty add trhee/4 gallons. Voltage should be above 12.5, but should be 13.7, but if still low battery may be too old or you didn't use the proper charger for the new type of battery, listen for your fuel pump to buzz for 2-3 seconds when you turn the key. Then does the engine turn over, but not start? If all thqt checks okay; wonderful, but if not do a follow-up and let the folks kmow who responded to your quest. GL Griz
