Default Flashing Check Engine Light

My 2004 5.4 V8 Triton is sputtering and jerking as I build speed. Now the check engine light is flashing and has a strong gas smell. Truck didn't wasnt to go any faster than 35. Any ideas or suggestions?

same thing happened on our Land Rover. Flashing light is bad. It is the yelling at you that the engine is misfiring. You should have a code stored with the cylinder that it thinks is bad.

pull over and shut the motor off. you are dumping pure gas into the cat(s) which will damage/destroy them in short time.

The problem in the Land Rover was generally a stuck exhaust valve(s). Sometimes it was bad ignition coil(s) allowing unburned gas into the exhaust stream.

Unsure what the problem is in this case. But a blinking MIL is bad. very bad.

If it is a stuck valve, the fix on the rover was either a valve job ... or a bottle or 2 of techron (or your favorite) fuel system cleaner. If it is the coil(s).. replace the coil(s)

Could be other things.. but the flashing light should not be ignored!

My 4.6 was doing it and I just had Ford Specialties of aTulsa fix it. I had a fouled out spark plug port. It somehow got full of water and mud. "Hmm I wonder" lol. Also does your speedometer jump around?

Yours is digital. So I would start by checking the wheel speed censors. Because they controll shifting in the auto trans and everything else.
