Default Engine Change out

Hey Guys
I am thinking of changine the engine in my 2002 F150 4X4, right now its got a 5.4 L triton, but with all the issues about spark plugs and Cam Phasers ( which mine are making noise).
So which other engine would fit??? and which other engine would be less trouble regarding plug and phaser problems. I am not concerned with loosing HP as I tow a small bass boat. plus I dont put alot of miles on vehicle just for recreation. I was told the 4.0 would match ?

Your 02 doesn't have cam phasers. What kind of noise is your engine making?

That is the best news I have heard since owning this truck, The noise is a constant ticking sounds and I first thought it was lifter, but then started reading about Cam Phasers and got on the wrong track. I have replace plugs on Passenger side and need to do drivers side.
Changed oil and filter Motor craft oil and filter correct grade, But cannot figure out metalic clicking sounds which seems to be coming from top end of engine.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

John

I don't understand it my 4.6 has almost 184,000 miles on it and you can damn near balance a nickle on top of it while running. No ticks clicks or anything. Might be a exhaust manifold gasket, or sometimes i heard a fuel injector might click.

I'm having the same problem on a '02 4.6. It has a lifter sounding tick on startup, that goes away after a couple of seconds. I'm getting ready to go diving for a bad lifter, and probably will change the whole set.

I've tried different oil weights and the flush stuff, what I've read in other places is that this is a common problem with these engines as they begin to age.

I too did the freak out about the cam phasers. There's alot of misinformation about that floating around on the net.
