Default Advancing Cam Timing - How do you do it!?

So, after PM'ing a member, I've decided to try and advance my Cam timing on my 94' 5.0L. Having never done this before I'm guessing it goes something like this:
  • Retard Ignition Timing by 8 degrees to compensate for advanced cam timing
  • Bring engine up to #1 TDC
  • Remove Timing set
  • Install cam gear
  • rotate crank until it matches the 4 degree advance keyway on the crank sprocket
  • re-install timing set
  • re-assemble as normal
  • re-check/adjust ignition timing
Is it really that easy or am I missing something?

Default Whatever Works:

Do your thing as described, then put a degree wheel on the crank and a runout guage on no. 1 intake valve stem and see what comes up. Most timing measurements are made at a valve lift of 0.050".
