Default Acceleration issues due to bad cam phasers?

I have an 04 FX4 5.4L and it has been diagnosed by Ford dealer as needing the cam phasers replaced. Shocking....I know. I have also been experiencing serious acceleration issues. Engine feels like it is choking. I have repaired/replaced nearly all I can think of that would cause this issue (fuel filters, cleaned injectors, air filter, replaced catalytic converters, tune up with new plugs, etc....). My question is, can the cam phasers be responsible for the acceleration issues? I can literally floor it and the engine revs high rpms but it takes forever to get up to speed. Thoughts?

Since there were no replies to my post, I assume there is not a clear answer. Verdict is in from Ford. Replacing the cam phasers does not fix the acceleration issue and there is still a ticking noise in the engine. Doesn't sound like a diesel, but still ticks. Next on the list is to replace the lifters. Anyone want to buy a 2004 F150? What a nightmare.

The ticking is considered a "normal" thing for these 3 valve 5.4 engines, Ford claims its a combination of the injectors, cam phasers and over head camshafts. At least thats what I'm told by them. Many have found this to lessen a lil bit by going to a high quality synthetic oil.

Now the accel issue is what I'm stumped on, mine seems like a dog at times and I'm told its the elec.Tbody and lack of a tuner but I see you have the SCT on yours so that didn't cure it?

The tuner helped a little, but there are still significant acceleration issues. I knew the ticking was considered "normal" by Ford, but mine literally knocked like an old school diesel engine. Embarassingly loud. I'm picking up my truck tomorrow or Tuesday, so I'll post back and let you know if the ticking is gone/better and if the acceleration issue is solved. If not, I'm $2100 in the hole with nothing to show for it. Good times.

does your truck run fine now? im being told i need cam phasers now. my truck actually dies when you give a slight bit of gas. like driveing in a parking lot. if you continue to accelerate your fine.

Actually, my truck is STILL in the shop. Over two weeks now. Replacing the cam phasers did nothing for the acceleration, I'm told (I have not seen or heard it since it went in the shop). I'm told it helped the knocking "a little". I have now replaced lifters and rocker arm and I'm waiting on a new camshaft. Just to note, there are apparently NO camshafts in all of the US, so my truck is just sitting there. Ford won't even reply to the dealer about helping me with a rental. I'm $2400 into it so far with no results as far as I can tell.

Default yo-bro!

i am a new member.i am in the market for a used f-150 lariet.please continue to tell me how your truck turned out after all that time and money in the shop? i love the way these fords look inside and out,but i`m thinking i might consider dropping an old hp 302 in it to avoid all the "nightmarish" issues i keep reading about!

Maybe I am way off base here but judging from the original post it sounds like the trans is slipping to me. You get RPMs but it dosen't move. Cam phasers could cause noise and lackluster acceleration but of the engine revs and the truck dosent move in accordance then I would be looking in the driveline.
