Default 99 f150 engine replacement

Hi all,
would appreciate some help here. I have a 1999 F150 with a 4.6L with a "W" code. It dropped a piston and I'm looking for a replacement motor. I've been searching on the web and I cant seem to find what year ranges I should be looking for. What year motors are direct replacements for my truck? Does it matter? Can i use a 2004 or 2006 4.6 or similar year motors? also, can i use a motor with a different code? I see a lot of "L" motors for sale, can i swap one of these? really am a beginner here so sorry for the newbie questions but I'm not really a motor guy, but i got stuck with the task of finding my own replacement motor so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

you can swap from 2001-2004 mustangs as long as they are 4.6L 2-Valve motors, and you can swap from 1997-2003 F150's, and from the F150 line it has to have the exact same engine code "W". now the easiest way to do it is go to jegs and look for a 2004 Mustant Cobra motor, they have forged internals and will last way longer than any other motor you can put in there, also you can take all of the good parts off of your motor and they will fit on the Cobra motor. any other questions feel free to ask. I am currently doing an Engine Build on my 99 F150 4.6L 4X4.
