5.4L starter Problem?
I Have 1999 f150 with the 5.4L and i am having trouble with the starter staying engaged and burning up the starter solenoid I have replaced the starter 3 times, i have also replaced the ignition switch, and the solenoid that is on the fire wall, and it has a brand new battery, the flywheel seems to be in good condition. I am asking what could be the problem? (fyi i have gotten the starters from autozone don't know if thats the problem)
Did you replace the solenoid with a Motorcraft solenoid?
There seems to be problems with the aftermarket solenoids from NAPA, Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone.
I am having the same problem now with my 1987 F-150 and several members have suggested ideas in the 1987-96 F150 forums.

i have a 98 ford f250 light duty with the 5.4l in it, my starter went out and i went and bought a brand new one and put it in, when i started it up it was making a sound like it wasnt disingaging from the flyweel, so i took and drove it to the guy that i bought it from to see what he had say, and by the time i got there i fried the starter, so he gave me a re man one but it was still sticking in. i checked all the wireing and its all ok plus i put new regulator on it to, and checked ignition its all good. i checked flywheel it looks fine too. i then took and put 2 washers in between the starter and the bell houseing and now it works... it dont make any since...
