Default 5.4 rattle

i have a 2004 5.4 with 51,000 miles that rattles like a diesel when it starts up. anyone had this problem, need help

Do a search on 'cam phaser problem', might be what your hearing.

hey thanks for the help. been looking on the forum and seems like a common problem.read that you should use motorcraft oil filter(been using fram) because of a drain back plug built into the filter to keep oil in the motor. going to try this first (cheapest) then on to the costly stuff. i appreciate the help, glad i found the forum and f-150 friends like you...

1997-2003 F-150

ISSUE:

Some 1997-2003 F-150 vehicles equipped with any engine, and 1997-1998 F-250 LD vehicles equipped with the 5.4L engine, may exhibit a ticking or knocking noise coming from the catalytic converters. The noise may be described as sounding like a diesel engine. The condition will be present when the vehicle is in gear at idle only, and is more pronounced when the vehicle is stationary, such as sitting in a drive-through line. The noise is normal, and is created by engine pulses being amplified through the light-off converters.
ACTION:

DO NOT replace converters unless loose internal components are found. To reduce the noise, install a wrap kit on each of the light-off converters. Refer to the instruction sheet included in the kit.

mine does this too have tried motorcraft filters and still does it currently using a k&n oil filter and its worse goin to swap it with a motorcraft this wknd iam looking for a fix for this and not a bandaid i know its timing chain noise but why could it be bad o rings on the tentioners?
