Default 1989 5.0 pinging????

My truck started pinging and I can't figure it out. I have tried everything anyone I know has suggested. I changed both catalytic converters , egr valve , egr valve controller , checked timing , changed cap rotor wires plugs. There is no check engine light on and the truck passed smog with no problems. I took carb cleaner and checked for a vacuume leak also.

I am stummped and no clue where to look next.

Passing California smog says alot, so assuming your check engine light system is functioning and there are no codes in the memory, lets assume the engine is lugging. I assume you had the AOD trans, is the TV rod adjusted correctly? Check out a good Ford shop manual as to its adjustment and perhaps set the shift down linkage for a lighter application of throttle.

Looking to more nasty issues, engine and intake valves all coked up with crud and the poor thing can't breath. Your said new EGR valve, and with California using dynos for emission testing, I can only assume that system is working. A working EGR is absolutely necessary as it reduces combustion temperatures. Those 20 year old emission systems were trial and error stuff and all had to to be at 100%.

Well the sea foam in the vacuum line did the trick! I just towed my boat around 600 miles with out a single ping.

I never would have tried the sea foam trick if it wasn't for this site , THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!

Or possibly a clogged injector.

Hi Marcsrollin,

Could you explain how you did the Sea Foam thing and was it spray or the liquid.

Thanks and God bless you all,
Ed
