Default 1989 f150 engine trouble

I have a 1989 f150. When i got it, it was misfiring horribly. I put new spark plugs, wires, and rotor on the truck. It GREATLY helped. Now it sometimes misfires, but not as much. If it just needed new plugs and wires I thought the problem would be fixed, but its not fixed completely and I'm not sure why. It maybe misfires once very minute or two. Could it be a stuck injector? A bad egr valve? Any ideas? Thanks

Hey there,
From my little past experience with my 4.9 there are a few other areas you can check. It wouldn't hurt to run fuel injector cleaner through a couple of times, check your intake and exhaust areas as well. Does your intake manifold show that you have an EFI? If so there is a Mass Air Flow (MAF) regulator/connection that needs to be cleaned out every now and then. You'll have to look this up exactly where it is located, my directions wouldn't be useful haha. And lastly it might simply be timing. Some places to start and if those don't help they will at least be good things to have checked and maintained.

Did you not replace the cap too?

Cap and rotor cause a lot of grief. Burned, even a small crack inside, you will see a line in there between two of the tower terminals. Sometimes a lot of Dielectric grease gets in there.

Cardifan5,

I bought my 96 F150 with a 4.9 I6 ten years ago. I installed new platinum plugs and dist cap with the bronze cap and rotor as soon as I got her home. Since then I have not taken off the dist cap nor checked the plugs. This thing keeps going and going and going.

My truck is a 91 with an inline 6 and it does the exact thing(mainly on hills), i've never really minded it and when i replaced my entire ignition system, that's when it started, so it could be something with the brand of anyone of the components. but the injectors are also a good plan, i have used the injector cleaner before and i didn't notice a change, but if it helped i didn't notice either.....
