Default shims with flip kit?

Have 4" mcgoughlys flip on a 2011 ext cab was wondering if I should be using shims with it? every once in a while on take off it almost sounds like a clunky U-joint. wasn't sure if it was in my head or not but now I think it may be from drive line angle...
