Default Wiring bed lights

Could someone please explain to me how to wire up some LED bed lights that come on when the cargo light comes on (like when I unlock the truck)? I tried to today but they aren't working at all. I ran the positive to the black wire on the cargo lights (I no black is usually negative but the other 2 wires on the lights were striped so I assumed that those were negative and something else). The ground from the lights ran straight to the ground on the battery. I tested the lights sting before before I tried to wire it up and it worked fine. Could someone please tell me what I did wrong?

Thanks

Buy a test light and multimeter before you burn something up. Please.

Those two tools will be handy with any electronic wiring you ever do.

Black isn't the right wire. And on these trucks most stripped wires a positive. Get a dmm like tackle suggested or search.

To use a test light in this case:

Strip back the wires a bit and put the clamp end on a bolt, the frame, anything metal that can ground. Then take the wand end and touch a wire. Open the doors so the cargo light turns on. If the bulb in the test light lights up, you have the power wire. If not, repeat on the other wires until you find the positive.
