Default Wipers working even with switch off

The wipers on my 2000 f150 xlt 4x4 have started to intermittently come on even with the switch off a couple months back. It started as just wiping the windshield once, every now and then out of the blue. It's progressed recently to wiping two or three times in a row followed by an indeterminate rest break before deciding to wipe anywhere from 1 to 3 more times at any given moment. Got to the point yesterday that I removed the fuse but had to reinstall it today due to wet weather. Now the switch works in every position when I turn them in normally, the only issue is when they're not needed. Is it the switch I need to replace or do I need to pop the hood and check for the problem near the motor or relay?

It sounds like there might be a short somewhere in the wiper wiring. I would try to replace the switch first.

I agree with this guy.

Those motors are expensive too (relative to their size) so start easy and hit a salvage yard if you have to go down the motor route.

Had this prob on my 01. Wipers wouldn't shut off period, so I pulled the fuse. Awhile later, I replaced the switch. The entire blinker switch assembly deal. Pretty intense for me. Had to pull the dash apart. But after an hour or two in the auto zone parking lot in the rain. A couple new screw drivers and 100 bucks or so. Back to normal.
