i own the 4.2 ford and only use the 5w20 castrol gtx.a friend of mine worked for a chain garage and a rep from ford came in and told them their shop would be responsible for engine repairs if they use any other oil thanthe 5w20.i guess ford was receiving warranty repair claims when ford drivers had their cars and trucks serviced by non ford garages using 5w30 oil.i believe my friend said the ford rep says it has to do w/ premature oil pump failure cause the pump was not designed to move oil w/ aviscosity over 20w.

i know it is low.the stuff looks like corn oil my wife cooks w/ ,but i know from mechanical experience i would do what they say.i have heard of guys using 5w30, but only after the motor has over 70k on it where the oil tolerances arent as crucial.i still go w/ my gut and use the 5w20 anyway.

The owner's manul calls for 5w20 so I would just go with that.

2001 XLT 4.2 140,000 miles. Has Castrol 5W-20 GTX with a MotoCraft filter and runs smooth. I dont use the high mileage GTX because I heard it will soften your seals to the point of causing leaks. Don't know if its true, but with 140,000 miles on it and running smooth with no leaks, why change success.

If you live in even colder climes, try an 0W-20. I use it during the winter here in WY.
