Default What is the best starter?

hey all, i have the 4.6 and my starter sh*t the bed on me. i turn the key to start, get one click and nothing happens, try 2 more times and she'll start. the dealer says its a starter so im looking for a new one to do myself after they quoted me $330 to do it. i promptly laughed in his face and walked away haha anyone know whats good and where to buy?

also, is it worth trying a re-manufactured one or should i not risk it being faulty?

thanks!

Default Labor, Labor, Labor:

The 330 buck estimate is about 2/3rds labor charges. The starter itself goes for less than a hundred bucks for a rebuilt*.
If you have an automotive electric shop in your neighborhood, as I do, you pull the starter and get a complete rebuild* of your existing starter including a new solenoid for about 90 bucks. And while you're under the hood, you replace the starter relay located on the firewall.

Rebuilt units from Advance or AutoZone run about $125-145.

BTW: The culprit causing the failure to crank may be the starter relay. Replace it and try again.

The best kind is one that works.

Seriously, the last starter I changed was on my old truck.
I got a reman from Pep Boys and it lasted 10 years plus until I sold the truck.
153K miles give or take a few.
Go the couple of extra bux and get the lifetime warranty reman. I've never had trouble with those.
