Default Weird electrical issue

I really hope someone can shed some light on this for me. My 97 F150 has developed a 4X4 issue that I can't nail down. I'm leaning towards the GEM module but I really don't think it's the problem either. Here's what is going on any advice would be greatly appreciated. My trucks 4X4 will work just as it should for a few days. Then all of a sudden it goes dead no click no dash light nothing. The only remedy I have found is to remove the battery cable. When I do that everything works fine for a few days. The reason I'm not convinced it's the GEM is I have no other issues. I can't imagine this being an issue with the relays because I don't think removing battery power would do anything to the relay. Anyone have any suggestions? I hate to just start replacing stuff without some idea of what's going on. My truck is electronic shift. Also if it's the GEM wouldn't removing fuse 6 do the same thing as removing the battery cable because removing the fuse does nothing only the battery cable. Thanks in advance for any help. Also is there any way to get the GEM module part number without removing it?
