Default vss location

Does anyone know the location of the vss on these trucks equipped with the m5r2 and 4 wheel drive? I've looked all over the transmission and dont see any kind of electrical connection at all for a speed sensor on the transmission itself.

The transmission is for a 2001 f150, 4x4, m5r2.

From he research I've done, the M5R2 5-speed transmission is a Mazda transmission. Not completely out of the unusual since Mazda is owned by Ford.

I'm seeing on several different F150 forums a difference of opinion. Some are saying on a 4X4 the vss is located either in the transfer case or rear axle/differential. Some put it on the driver's side of the tailshaft housing (where the driveshaft goes into the tranny). Others say there is no vss on Ford trucks made after 1999/2000 and speed is registered via the PCM.

Most are in agreement that the Haynes manual shows both placement and testing procedures.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks, it was. I have seen and read similar things, and the reason i ask is because i just swapped this transmission into an 06 supercrew, 4x4, that formerly had the 4r70w. All the mechanical stuff was straightforward and relatively easy. Everything bolted up without any issues, and apart from the transmission codes popping up the only real issue i have that cant be fixed with a reflashed ecu is the speed sensor.

On the old transmission the sensors were on the drivers side of the gearbox housing but no such luck with the m5r2.

i have a chiltons manual, but maybe the haynes manual is more in depth.

Maybe Ill have to find a donor transfer case from a car from 2001.

I have an '02 SCrew 2WD I have a Haynes manual for. I can check it when I get back home later today and maybe scan & send you more info if you like. I know it covers '97-'03 F150....I believe it has a 4X4 section.

Save you from having to buy one right away. You may also find a YouTube video that will help.
