Default Vacuum leak???

1997 F150,4x4, w/4.6L. The truck is running rough, like its missing. A few months ago I had 2 mechanics say I had a lifter tap and it would lead to this problem. Now today ive finally had time to look around/research. Shows a P0174 code, and has no 4x4 engagement when I try. Do I have some kinda bad vacuum leak? Mechanic said before that the engine was gonna need replacing. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

They wern't mechanics, -perhaps wanna b's. These engines don't have lifters.

Since you have a problem locating real mechanics. Just take it to Ford. I assure you techs and mechanics work there. They have to eat, so do their families, so it'll cost you.

Check the PCV line/elbowyourself, or do as Jbrew said and find a real mechanic.

Mechanic called today and so far is suspecting an intake gasket leak as he found coolant on the plug of the first cylinder that was missing. Gonna do new gasket, new wires, and a coil pack. He is 95% sure this will fix her.

That should fix your lifters.
