Default Unknown bolt

Hi guys, new f150 owner here and I have a question about a bolt near my tailgate that I Don’t know the purpose of. This is a 2001 model and there is one bolt on either side of the bed near the tailgate that is not involved in the tailgate mechanism. It seems to be something from the previous owner, maybe for a pice of equipment. Can they be removed? Pics attached

Any ideas?

It didn't leave the factory like that.
It was installed afterwords for some use unknown to both you and me.

I believe that’s a bolt for a bed extension. Those cage look thing that you can flip out when you put you tailgate down. It is for a strap that loops to the bolt to stabilize the bed extension.

I think that hole just above the bolt is where the bed extension hinges from.

Something like this I think it goes to
