Transmissions compatible with 1997 F150
Hey all,
I was wondering if you could tell me what transmissions are compatible with a 1997 Ford F150, V8 2 wheel drive truck?
Mine only has reverse right now, and is leaking fluid everywhere. I want to replace it asap, but am going to pull one from a junkyard. Anything I should watch out for?
Thanks

Assuming you have an auto trans and a 4.6L. I got a hold of my buddy at a salvage yard and he gave me the following info from his salvage interchange index.
FORD F150 PICKUP 97 A.T.; 8-280 (4.6L), (4R70W, AODE-W), 4x2
FORD F250 PICKUP 97 A.T.; under 8500 GVW, 8-280 (4.6L), (4R70W/AODE-W), 4x2

^^ like he said, the 4R70W is the most common transmission for our trucks. Which engine does your truck have? not sure if that matters...
You could also possibly put in the 4R100W, which is the next step up from the 4r70w. It goes into the 7700's (like mine), super duties, etc...
Not sure if it would work on your truck (you would have to do some research) but if you could find one of those they are nice, theyre more heavy duty.

Thanks,
I gotta double check what my engine is. And yes, it's an auto. When do these trannys start having problems with them? At what mileage? I'm probably going to find one with around 150k on it. Hopefully it isn't too high.

I have a 4R70W for sale if you are close to the Kansas city Month area. Look on the tag on the drivers door jamb. Bottom right side under TR. If it is a U is is the right one.
