When shifting with a wrench just shift it all the way one way. If that's 2hi then you'll know which way it is. Basically trial and error. I would unplug it and keep it in the truck. That way if you need to shift it for some reason you can crawl under to shift. All of this assuming it is the gem not just the TC. The gem stands for general elec module. Under dash somewhere and it'll have a number on it to order a new one. Every set of options and model year has a different one. Should be about 400 from a ford dealer.

Drop the transmission fluid pan and inspect for any metal. sounds like your acumulator in the trans blew out.

Hello again. I have some bad news...I removed the Electric shift motor (ESM), and wrenched it over to 2H and it did not fix my problem. It was very easy. I did manage to wrench it into 4-Hi and 4-Low while I was under there, with no results as well. With it not going into 4 wheel drive and after all the troubleshooting, Im pretty sure it is the transfer case.

One final request....I would be grateful for any tricks or tips in removing and replacing the transfer case. You guys have been great! Again, I appreciate all your help...Samuel

Replacing it is really easy. I had mine out and back in all in about an hour with it sitting on the ground. Pretty simple. Just unbolt the 6 or so bolts that hold it to the transmission, then slide it off the tail shaft

Okay gentleman, thanks for the advise. I will drop the pan tomorrow before I drop the transfer case. If I do have a dirty pan, and my accumulator did in fact blow out. Does that mean I have to replace my tranny? I will post my findings. I feel like Im gettign closer!

SamHulk,
The Gem Module controls many electronic parts of your truck. Its also deals with the transfer case and transmission. What happens is there is a leak somewhere in front left corner of your truck and water get in and over time destroys the GEM. Here is a link on how to change it out (http://www.sparkys-answers.com/2009/...le-window.html). It might be the source of your problems. I changed mine out and was having problems with my drive engaging and it fix it. I went to my local pick your parts and got one for forty bucks. Its worth a try before you start really digging into the transfer case. If you have questions about how to, just ask, I just did this about a month ago. Good luck
