Default Transmission seal?

I'm am trying to figure out this scoop. My "seal" is missing. One mechanic - no big deal, it's always been that way. Another says, they need to drop the whole tranmission and re-seal it. First of all, what is the name of this? I'm looking on RockAuto and see a seal but, seems too simple. Anyway, a short explanation of the purpose and any part numbers that I might need would be helpful.

Thanks,
Charles

This is not my actual truck - just for illustration.

I've always called it the inspection plug. I'll see if I can find a P/N for it.... As I recall, the AOD, AODE, and 4R70W all use the same plug.

Yes, that's what one mechanic is saying - eye hole/inspection port. Probably a decent idea to seal it but, it doesn't look like a transmission drop is warranted.

Thanks for looking it up. I've been googling like a mad man.

That's not a seal of any type. If there is a leak from the front of the trans like a pump seal or torque converter seal it would leak there. If there is a leak from the rear of the engine oil pan or rear main seal it would leak there. Get a fresh drop of the leaking oil on a white paper towel to determine what color it is before deciding it's a trans or engine leak.

Yeah, this isn't meant to hold back fluid by any means. It's to keep water and dirt from going in, rather.

Is your intent to try and stop a leak?

Nope - no leak. Just trying not to get taken by a mechanic.

OK, when I read the pic was not your truck, I guess I should have asked if yours was leaking too in the beginning.

That truck in the pic looks like my Expedition did, which suffered from the passenger head casting issue leak.
