Default Transmission problem?

I have a 2001 Screw 5.4 and wanted to change the Tranny fluid. My Father-in-Law said I had to take it to the Dealer for this! Is this true? today while on a small grade may RPM's went to 3500 but my speed did not increase! I backed off and felt it down shift, then it was ok.This happened before.I've had the truck since Oct. 140k on it. The fluid is not low but looked dirty. I also have put tw0 sensors, new plugs, New erg and hoses(it blew a hole in one) I dont think the cats are plugged since they look new but I am going to change the exhaust. This problem scares me! Any other Ideas and can I change the fluid/screen? This truck is clean and I love it but Just trying to get it running good again. My 1st Ford! Always had GM and I dont miss 'em Thanks Budddy

Do NOT it have it flushed....have it changed and have a new filter installed. Could be all it needs ....you should try that first.

Default One More Thing:

The service tech should know that the torque converter can be and should be drained.....and as the foregoing post warns: DO NOT have the tranny flushed.

The refill fluid should be Mercon V....my rides have ATF+4, but that's my preference (and the preference of the shop where I have tranny service done.)
