Default Transmission Problem

Yesterday my truck was running fine and i come back out to it after running inside and when i drive it wont get out of secound gear even if i use the shifter on the column 1 then 2 then drive. It wont get into 3 or 4th gear. Any ideas its a 98 f150 4x4 offroad. I heard it maybe valve body thats dirty or bad or a filter clogged

I can't say for sure what your problem is....
However, it seems odd that it ran fine one minute and then acts like it's toast the next.
Given that you have an electronically controlled transmission, I suspect that the tranny is not the problem, but rather a sensor or something else related to the computer system.
Just my 2 cents....

You could try to reset the computer and see if that makes a difference.

Did you pull any codes?

Check the sensor on the shift linkage. I'm not sure exactly what they call it but it tells the PCM what position the shifter is in. If the sensor goes bad you get 2nd gear only.
On these electronically shifted transmissions, the shifter only gives you Park, Reverse, Neutral, Forward. The PCM decides which gear you get in forward.

I had this fail on my 91 and it would go to second gear.
Kinda scary when you're doing 70 and it jumps to 2nd gear....

The connector had turned into green chia pet inside.
