Opinions? Auto or Manual for either?

I'm looking at a few 98 F150 Ext Cab trucks to replace my now almost completely dead 91 explorer (can't complain, 325k miles, 280k of which are mine). But need something more capable.

I'm curious about preferences for Auto or Manual transmissions and manual transfer cases versus push button (or ****). I'm tempted by a few 5 speed V-8s I've found. I haven't had a chance to get behind the wheel of a 5 speed yet but I'm usually a fan of manual transmissions, especially in snow since it gives me more options for bad weather.

Really just curious to get opinions on peoples preference for certain combos.
