Default Transfer Case Stuck In Low Range

So the other day I was in town and slowed down to take a turn. When I straightened her back out I put it in gear to accelerate out and it was like I was in nuetral. I pulled over and put it in any gear and it would not move.I could even shift into gears without pressing the clutch in. I reached down and shifted into 4-hi. still nothing. I was able to wrangle it into 4lo and it moved. So I moved the lever back into 2hi and I was still in low range albeit in 2wd. I cannot get it back into 2hi or out of low range to even see what the heck happened in the first place. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but I'm at a loss right now with this. Anybody got any ideas before I tear in the t-case this weekend?

You must be in Neutral to get in or out of 4lo.

I'm definitely in nuetral. I can move the t-case shifter in any postition and it's still in low range no what.

Sucks but it sounds like a mechanical failure of the transfer case.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. I just don't understand why. Sounds like I'm tearing the case apart this weekend.

any luck getting this fixed? I am experiencing the same issue. It started when I downshifted there was a pop then no power and gear shifter moves through 1-5 and R without pushing the clutch, Drop it into 4low and it drives and all gears work 1-5 and R but now its stuck in low (hubs lock and unlock when shifting the tcase but stays in low).

I decided to drive it around the block in 4 low this past weekend (due to withdraws) when i got back i ran the tcase shifter through the ranges 1 more time and backed up into the driveway, well it fell out of low and i took it around the block 3 or so times in 2wd hi working fine... then it popped again and back to the same problem. Couldnt get it to fall back out of low this time.

The fact that it worked again (albeit momentarily) leads me to believe that this is some sort of switch more than outright mechanical breakage.

there is hardly any info on this problem that I have been able to find online, so if you got it resolved your results would be most appreciated!!!

You have enough fluid in tbe Tcase? Maybe it is seizing up. Can you have someone get in the truck and cycle into 4x4 so you can see if / how it is cycling?

Maybe something as simple as a linkage. Or possibly the shift forks in the t case are worn out and can't move the gear on the mainshaft. But I'd just go to the junkyard and pull a tcase and switch it out. I think it's 12 half inch bolts and it's out.

There is only 6 bolts that hold the transfer case to the transmission.
