Default Trans question

My buddys 1999 F150 is not wanting to shift into third gear it will shift to second and then the rpms just sky rocket. He says if he stomps it it will clank around and finally shifts and ideas what it could be or if he would need to do a rebuild kit or all new tranny?

it was fixed for good i believe the 3rd time, the problem was everytime the tranny guy fixed it he would just fix the broken parts and not figure out what was causing it to break. The guy that got it got a hell of a deal. 99 f150 with 89,000 miles and well over 10 grand in upgrades for $6500.

Well he is really just trying to sell it but he doesnt want to put it off on someone else to fix i dont think but he also isnt looking at putting a ton of money in it but was wondering if a rebuild would do the trick or maybe trying to go out and find a used one to just replace it....So if anyone has one they want to get rid of let me know.

I've got to admit, transmissions are a mystery to me. I've rebuilt my share of engines, and I recently tried to rebuild a transmission but it didn't work any better afterwards. I think they are more of an art than a science.
