Default which trans?

LMC TRUCKS: Search results for: '1998 Ford F150 Pickup 4WD'

Limited search data, so "No results".
I have a 1998 F-150 XLT 5.4 L auto trans- 4WD. Inside driver's door on B pillar: trans code "E". Please tell me the transmission if you really know. I need to order Trans Position Switch. Ford gave me "No results". I think they do not recognize anything that old. Is it a 4R100 or a 4R70W? Thanks!

1998 TRANS code "E" = E4OD per factory service manual.

Transmission Codes
  • U — automatic 4R70W-AOD (Econoline, F-150, F-250, Explorer/Mountaineer)
  • E — automatic E4OD (Econoline, F-150, F-250)
  • M — five-speed manual overdrive (F-150, F-250, Explorer/Mountaineer, Ranger)
  • D — automatic five-speed (Explorer/Mountaineer, Ranger)
  • T — Automatic four-speed (Ranger)
4R100 didn't come out until the '99 model year (late 1998 )

Projectsho89: I saw that too. Problem is Amazon is asking for either 4R100 or 4R70W. Free delivery and excellent returns for free for any reason.

Amazon is wrong. Happens often.

Pick one of these as being correct: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...ge+sensor,4584

97-98 with an E code transmission is an E40D, or late 98 is an 4R100. The tag on the side will have an F75 for the starting digits, makes it a E40D. If it has F85, it is a 4R100. Doesn't matter in 97-98 if it's 5 or 7 lugs. The 5.4 only came with the big trans. In 99 they lightened up the trucks and most had the 4R70.
