Default Towing

I have a 97 F150 4.6v8 with the 3.55 gears and 4x4. according to my owners manual i am able to tow 6800lbs, i went to uhaul today to see about renting a trailer and they said that my truck is not heavy enough to tow 6600lbs(my 84 blazer and their 2200lb trailer) they never even asked anything about my truck(engine size or gearing). and i told them that i will be taking the top off of the blazer which is around 250lbs and some other things out of it and it will be lighter, but they dont car, because their computer says 4400lbs for that truck. the other place i tried was penske and they dont rent car trailers unless you pull it with their truck. which is a box truck. so my question is, is my f150 able to tow that truck on any trailer or am i screwed.

It'll pull it. I pulled my boat with my 02, it was heavy when I was pulling it up hills though. Other than that it wasn't too bad. My 02 was rated at 6,200lbs per the manual it also was a supercab 4x4 with the 4.6L with 3.55ls gears and 17" wheels. My boat weighs 6500lbs with the trailer, fuel and all my gear, then you gotta add me the wife and our two kids, say another 350 to 400lbs.

What's the gross vehicle rating on your truck? I don't remember what it was for mine.

Combined rating was what I meant to ask...Your not to exceed either even though the tow rating is 6800. That would exceed the combined rating. My guess is their looking at that number to calculate how much you can actually tow. Go to another U-Haul and tell them your just gonna pull something lighter.

Also you should be able to rent a trailer from an equipment rental center. I was going to rent one to tow a Back Hoe that a friend was going to let me borrow. I ended up not needing it, but the rental center didn't give me any hassle.

Well I have a '97 F-150 with a 4.6 in it and I pull an 18 foot car trailer. I have hauled anything from a 1966 Chevy C10 to a 1978 Ford F-150 4x4. Plus my trailer has been modified with an electric winch and about another 150 lbs of metal added to it to mount the winch. The trailer itself is rated for 16,000 lbs (2 8,000lb rated axles). True my pickup I have set up for pulling with air bags and coil over rear shocks so I can load the pickup almost like a 3/4 ton. But my pickup pulls all that weight just fine when i turn the overdrive off. So your pickup will pull what you want to pull just fine.
