Torque Convertor
I have a 2001 Ford F150 with Automatic. When I drive (or even just sit still and rev), and the RPM hits 2000, I hear a sound that has to me sounded like valve tapping. I recently had a mechanic listen and say it sounds like the Torque Converter.
I'm not a mechanic, am able to follow instructions (like on YouTube) and have fixed things in the past. Since replacing the torque converter involves dropping the transmission, it would be nice to be able to be sure that is the problem. I'm not sure how to do that, short of pulling it out of the truck and checking it out.
If anyone has any ideas, I would very much appreciate it. I would have to save up to have the work done. I'm retired and living on Social Security.
I AM able to get around, by driving my 1998 Jeep Cherokee.
Additional info: This truck has served as the tow vehicle for a 6x12 cargo trailer that I've been sleeping in for almost 2 years now. The truck has less than 100k miles on it.
Regards, and thanks in advance,
Pat

Pat, if you are looking for a way to be sure the torque converter is the cause, the only way for this to happen is to have it cut open.
Without actually being able to hear it, this would be difficult for us to diagnose. If you could possibly get a video and post it, I think we can probably help you out easier. This could also be a cracked flex plate.... anything really.

And BTW, I'm not asking for miracles. Just exhausting as many possibilities as I can.
Thanks very much,
Pat
Yeah it really could be a number of things. I had (still have) an 80s model trans am years ago that had the valve tap sound, pulled the motor and it turned out to be caused by one of the nuts on the back of a connecting rod had spun off completely and was laying in the oil pan. Few years later, had the exact same (to my ears) sound, so I thought "that damn thing has come off again". Pulled the motor out for another rebuild and it ended up being a cracked flex plate instead.
I FINALLY got my ducks in a row enough to make a video of this noise that my truck is making. I will try to make another one from the perspective of under the truck.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Pat
