Tachometer retrofit
Having a base model XL means I get the bare bones model. And while I can live withoutn power windows and electric door locks, I cant live without a tachometer. So the question is, any chance we’re pre-wired for a gauge cluster with a tachometer?
97-98 you can plug and play them. 99 and up, you have to swap the control board from one head to another to make them work, because of the mileage (stored int he memory of the board) and the PAT's system. It is done quite a bit, just you have to do it carefully so you don't crack a solder joint.

Yours is a 99. Sorry. You have a digital odometer, so you are stuck with doing it the hard way. There is at least 2 write-ups in the search section about this swap. I'm guessing that on a 10 scale it's a 5 or so to do.
I don't think you'll be able to do the board swap. Yes, all PATS and mileage data IS stored in that PCB. However, I do believe that the pin slots are different, and will not slide onto a tach cluster. I did an navi cluster swap, however I already had a cluster with tach. If you can't do that, then you will need to flash another cluster to your truck, and have the mileage swap. The Ford dealer should be able to do it for you, but I would definitely look for an alternative for the sake of your wallet.
You can also download Forscan (free app) and get an ELM 327 interface tool (check Forscan's website to see which are 'good' and which will not work) which should allow you to flash in the new cluster. You will have to reprogram keys to the vehicle. Getting a good ELM 327 is essential, the one I'm using isn't that great, I can flash a new cluster to the ECM but for some reason it won't allow me to program keys to the vehicle. Luckily I own a device just for programming keys that takes care of that part. I've read that other Forscan users with the correct ELM 327 devices have no problems programming keys.

Thanks again
