Default Strange starting issue

For about a year now my truck will sometimes make kind of a loud grinding sound when I try to start it. Idk how to explain it, I've learned that if I turn the key on and wait for the odometer to come up and gently twist the key to try to crank it, it usually won't do it. Not sure what this could be, pretty embarrassing when it does it cause everyone around turns to look. It actually done it 2 days ago when leaving advance auto. Has anyone experienced this before??

Sounds like the gears are sheared off the starter or the flywheel. I'd replace it quick before it does more damage

X2 you'll wear the teeth off all the way and you'll be stranded with a non start able truck

I wouldn't think it's mechanical since if I wait for the odometer to come up it starts almost every time, maybe once a month it does it. But if I get in and immediately try to crank it then it does it like every 10th time or so

I originally thought I had a bad spot on my flywheel too
