Steering Problems
I have a 97 F150 w/5.4 has about 103k on it. I have only owned it for the past year. About 2 weeks ago, the power steering started to becoming stiff at idle. Once you give it some gas, it works normal.
Today, I took it to in to a buddies shop, thinking I need to replace the power steering pump. He just called and said that the pump seems to be working fine with the truck up on the rack. With no weight on the front end. He thinks it may not be the PS pump. Thinks it could be something binding, or a bad gearbox.
Can it still be the PS pump that is bad, and the weight of the truck alone is enough to keep the pump from doing its job?
I have also read in another thread that it may just be binding in a linkage, but the steering is only stiff at RPM's under 800. If it was binding, wouldn't I feel this at all speeds?
Any help would be much appreciated. Otherwise, I'm looking at making an appointment with the dealer.
