I tried knocking on the starter but that didn't so anything. I am going to try to pull the #4 plug and see if it may be hyrdolock. If not, I will probably pull the starter off and get it tested.

Pull all the plugs out and try to crank it. Also did you remove the belt to rule out the AC compressor? They lock up and keep the motor from turning all the time.

Check the a/c comp for being locked up, it will keep the motor from cranking

Have you tried the easiest thing and attempted to jump the vehicle from a known good battery?

Very first thing you should check on a no crank symptom is the battery. Once you have completely ruled out the battery then you start looking at other things.

Just because the lights come on inside the cab does not mean the battery has enough power to turn over an engine. There is a big difference between the amount of amps a tiny light pulls, and the amount of amps it takes to turn over that engine.

Check the battery first.

Yeah. I kinda assumed he tried to jump it first and that's how he knows it's not his battery, but you never know.

Same thing happened to my 4.2l at 63,000 miles... Hydrolock. Ford replaced the whole top end and stuff.

So I got home this evening and tried to crank the truck. It actually turned over once like it had been, then the starter spun. So I turned it over again and it cranked. Ad a big puff of smoke came out of the exhaust. Looked white, but it was also dark except for the porch light.

Thoughts?

No, it cranked and started, several times.
