I'm guessing this is sort of a common problem on the f150's...I recently got an f150 and it has started to do this to me too. it is becoming more and more frequent, maybe two or three times a week. I have found that if you turn the key to the 'on' position, shift to neutral, then start it, it won't grind...This method becomes a hassle however...I would like to see what other people have done to remedy this...

Any word on the shimming solution?

Your starter is starting to go out most probably. Replace it before it leaves you stranded. The bendix on the starter might not be popping out to mesh with the flexplate and just spinning instead.
