Starter Relay Question
I just came out of a store and got nothing when I turned the key. All my interior accessories came on and my dash lights cycled like they should, but no start. Now I've had this truck for a couple of weeks and it's a model that I am not used to, but I crawled under and checked connections the at starter(battery cables were fine), which seemed fine to me. I tried to start it again(never know) and nothing, so I put the switch in the run position and went to jump the relay and that worked. Drove home and tried again in the driveway but nothing.
So I am assuming that it is the relay and am lucky because I have a new one in the shop.
Now here's my question.
I checked part numbers on Rock Auto's site, to verify that the relay I have will fit the 99 since mine was for a 94 Bronco. They matched.
However the relay I have has 2 large studs and 2 small studs. Problem is that the relay on the truck only has one small stud(and the 2 large of course). The pics on Rock's site for the 99 relay shows 4 studs
I'm gonna keep diggin', but thought I would post this in case anyone has encoutered this problem
Thanks

Well, the new relay works fine as did the old....The problem is somewhere between the ignition and the relay....
I ran a jumper from the pos. post to the (s) post(this gets 12v from the ignition in the start position.
and that works fine....So I'm gonna have to track down the problem...Yaaaaa
If anyone else has encountered this problem.....feel free
In the meantime, I'm gonna get a restraining order on that Murphy guy....I think he's stalking me...

when i bought my sons 2000 it had a push button start added to the dash because it would not start. the push button was ran directly to the relay. same as you everything else worked but no starting. I had some other work done and the mechanic said i found a ground that wasnt tight so i cranked it down, after that it started fine with the key. im not sure which ground but that was my problem.
Hey, thanks for the reply, but I'm pretty sure it's not electrical.(???)
What was happening was the key(in cylinder) would not turn to start postition. It would turn just a little past the run Postion but then it could go no further. It did not feel like it was binding or sticking, but rather just felt like it was as far as key was meant to go. But it eventually rectified itself, Though I did change the relay, the problem persisted for 5 minutes after I did, then it just started for me.
I did notice that the key went much farther now and actually engaged the starter.
I was testing voltage from the ignition, with my honey at the wheel She had the key turned completely and I had no power to tester. I jumped from battery to "s" post and got start. This told me that it was an electrical problem between the switch and the relay.
Of course one it started again, I realized that my suspicions of the key not turning all the way to the start position.
Not sure what would cause that,....yet
On a side note, my dad had a start button hooked up on an old tempo he used to drive years ago.
