Default Staggered shocks.... Why??

Ok so I have noticed that on these trucks that the back axle shocks can be in different locations. On my 01 Lariat 4x4 the drivers side shock is behind the axle, the passenger side is on the front, but there looks like there's brackets on the back passenger side for it. On my 2 friends Fx4's both shocks are on the back on both trucks. I've tried to find info on this but I can't. So I've got 2 questions...

1. Is there an advantage to having it one way or the other.

2. If the way I have them isn't the better way can I mount the passenger side one behind the axle when I get new ones??

Mine are both on the back. If it is indeed to prevent axle wrap then your 1 up because with my lift I get axle wrap terrible. All the chevy trucks I work on have staggered rear shocks.
