I always use a torque wrench on aluminum....... Change many plugs in cast iron heads growing up and never used torque wrench.... Heck you had to regap the plugs every 5000-10,000 miles then..... a couple times a year. But if you're using a typical 8" long 3/8 inch ratchet handle it is pretty hard to over torque by hand without clearly excessive effort.
